Westerkirk Parish Church [Church Of Scotland] In Scotland: History,Facts, & Services
Westerkirk Parish Church [Church Of Scotland] In Scotland is located in the small village of Westerkirk in the Scottish Highlands. It is one of the oldest churches in Scotland and dates back to at least the 14th century. Although the current building dates to the early 19th century, it is thought to be situated on the site of an earlier church. The church is known for its association with the Border Reivers History - a 16th century phenomenon involving cattle rustling and other lawless acts along the Scottish-English border. In the 19th century, it was also used as a meeting point for the Covenanters – those who opposed the imposition of Episcopalianism in Scotland in favour of Presbyterianism.
Today, the church serves as a place of worship for the local community in Westerkirk, in addition to serving as a venue for special services throughout the Highands and Borders area. The church is open to visitors during daylight hours and holds regular Sunday services and Bible studies, as well as special services on certain public holidays.
